Hezarfen

HezarfenA beautiful hilarious animation based on the historical event of the first human flight which took place in Turkey in the early 17th century. Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi (1609-1640) of Istanbul is the first human being to successfully fly with artificial wings. Hezarfen took off from the 183-foot tall Galata Tower near Bosporus Strait in Istanbul and landed successfully at Uskudar, on the other side. Sultan Murad IV who witnessed his flight was highly pleased but had to exile Hezarfen later due to religious and political pressure. One of the three airports in Istanbul is named after him.

This animated short is directed by Tolga Ari, Romain Blanchet, Chung-Yu Huang and Rémy Hurlin.

Music by Yannis Dumoutiers and sound design by Ozan Kurtulus.

Typolution

TypolutionA fantastic typographic animation by Olivier Beaudoin showing how we are destroying the nature and consequently our own niche. The song "Nostrand" by Ratatat has been used as the background score. Beaudoin has created a minimalist environment with alphabets, numbers and punctuation marks and has beautifully depicted the gradual decay of our environment through this typographic environment.

L'Enfant de la Haute Mer

L'Enfant de la Haute MerAnother superb French animated short-film with a water-color effect and beautiful imagery.

The title means 'Child of the High Sea' in English. The story is inspired by the novel "L'Enfant de la Haute Mer" by Jules Supervielle. The film shows a small girl who lives in a village near the sea. It portrays her imaginations. She seems to be waiting for someone, preferably her father, to return from the sea. Without subtitle i could make out this much but the beautiful painting-coming-to-life feel and brilliant production makes me watch it again and again.

Fin D'ete (End of Summer)

Fin D'eteA beautiful short animation film made by Patrick Harboun, Ronan Le Fur and Joaquim Montserrat while studying at Supinfocom, a French CG animation school. They wanted to create a contemplative movie, based upon moods and colors that they had in mind than a heavy storyline. They worked on it for 6 months. The background music was composed by Christophe Julien.

They story is about a woman who decides to stay back in an abandoned city in the midst of a tropical storm. The different shades of color is worth seeing. Its one of my favorite films.

Pauvre Pierrot (1892)

One of the first animated films ever made. This French animation was created by Émile Reynaud and was broadcasted in October 28, 1892 (3 years before the invention of cinema) at Musée Grévin in Paris, France, using his Théâtre Optique system - similar in principle to a modern film projector. It was shown along with his 2 other films, 'Le Clown et ses chiens' and 'Un bon bock'. The entire program was then called Luminous Pantomimes.

The film consists of 500 individually painted images. Reynaud himself was the script writer and projectionist. Although it was made earlier than the invention of cinema but it was colored and more than that - not a silent film. The musical score was done by Gaston Paulin.

The story in brief:

One night, Arlequin come to see his lover Colombine. But then Pierrot knocks at the door and Colombine and Arlequin hide. Pierrot starts singing but Arlequin scares him and the poor man goes away. (courtesy - IMDb)

Humorous Phases of Funny Faces (1906)

The earliest animated film ever made is a silent cartoon by J. Stuart Blackton in the year 1906. J. Stuart Blackton, one of the co-founders of the Vitagraph Company was a newspaper cartoonist. It was the first animated work on standard picture film, using the single frame method and was projected at 20 frames per second. It is the earliest surviving American animated film.

The film is about a cartoonist's line drawings of two faces on a blackboard and they apparently came to life. The two faces smiled and winked and the cigar-smoking man blew smoke in the lady's face. Also, a circus clown led a small dog to jump through a hoop. It actually uses cutout animation made to look like chalk outlines.

Fantasmagorie (1908)

The first fully animated film in history, made on modern picture film projector by Émile Cohl (Emile Eugene Jean Louis Courtet, 1857-1938), a French caricaturist of the largely-forgotten Incoherent Movement, cartoonist and animator. He is called 'The Father of the Animated Cartoon' and 'The Oldest Parisian'.

This silent animation is not a narrative but a collage of some actions performed by the main character. But the way one action leads to the other, the speedy merging of different scenes glues the eyes to the screen.

Cohl made it from February to May or June 1908.He placed each drawing on an illuminated glass plate and then traced the next drawing-with variations-on top of it until he had some 700 drawings to make this film. This created a consistent movement and continuity between the drawings. The characters look like chalkboard caricatures which was popular in those days. But Cohl filmed black lines on paper and then printing in negative, making his animations appear like chalk drawings.

Basu was India's first psychologist. The story is about the battle between red ants and black ants. Apparently there are some shades from Mahabharata and Illiad as the war happens due to a female character. This is the theatrical trailer of 'Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang'.
